Manchester United will have to make do without Ashley Young for their UEFA Champions League double header against Real Madrid, as the winger has been ruled out for 4-6 weeks with injury.
While Young did travel with the squad for their week’s break in Qatar, he is suffering from ligament damage in his knee and did not train fully.
The loss of Young will be a blow to Sir Alex Ferguson, as he has been the team’s best winger this season. With Nani either injured or out of favor and Antonio Valencia showing some truly embarrassing form, the manager will have to be creative with who he selects on the wings.
Shinji Kagawa has played on the left over the past few weeks, as has Danny Welbeck. It is likely that one of the two will occupy that role in the coming games, with Valencia and Nani battling it out for a spot on the right.
It is possible that Young could be back for the second leg at the Santiago Bernebeu in March, but it is unlikely that United would want to risk him for such a crucial game.
